Dwarf Fortress: How to Use the Vermin Catcher - When this blog started some months ago, Dwarf Fortress was one of the interesting game online that I wanted to write about.

Anyways, this is a guide that will help you on how you can use the vermin catcher in Dwarf Fortress.

Dwarf Fortress: How to Use the Vermin Catcher
Table of Contents

The Vermin Catcher Workshop

To begin, we talk about the cage stockpile. This is where every animals that are locked in the cage traps are kept. Even some other Items you get during trades such as webbed cages and traps are kept here too.

From here on you get to decide what to do with them. You are allowed to TAME them or just have FUN with it.

This is where you can find the vermin workshop.

Now you have just two options, you can either catch vermin or tame them. And we all know that before you can tame animals you must first capture them.

Once you choose the "catch a vermin option", a dwarf automatically go hunting for vermin using the cage traps. I will suggest you go for a metal cage.

Now, you better go for a metal cage, cheap metal cage. Now a dwarf has caught a vermin. They will haul it back to the cage stockpile

Here it isn’t entirely visible but in ASCII it will be seen like little blinking dots in cages. Other animals that can be tamed is rat, grasshopper, and wren.

Dwarf Fortress: How to Tame the Vermin

Move to the vermin catcher and choose out the option which says "tame a vermin". Watch how a dwarf will immediately move to the workship with a vermin and also come along with what it will use to tame the vermin.

In this case, it came in with bed and a cabinet for the mice. I had seen food before but this is new for me, perhaps it wanted to help tame the mice by letting it nibble on wood. Either ways it tamed it in one go.

The image shows a dwarf hauling the bed.

Now you have successfully tamed the creature...

We can see that this dwarf also came with a cabinet for taming this creature.

Now you have the second creature tamed successfully.
Now we have tamed 2 creatures. Having more workshops of the same type help in doing the same task at a higher speed and helps sure the dwarves ” need excitement in life ” need.

Instead of having one dwarf do the job, it is possible to allow 5 dwarves do the job. 5 dwarves do it more efficienty.

Dwarf Fortress: How to Release the Tamed Vermin

Now we release the tamed / untamed vermin, as per your wish and need really. There isn’t a reason to release the tamed vermin but you can.

Looking at the options in the image below, you get to make a cage you want.

You now have a cage on that floor, mind you this is not an animal cage but a big cage you can use in making traps.

Now in this cage we assign creatures. Just press the indicated button and click what creatures you’d like in that cage.

Now here we can see what is assigned. I assigned the tamed things. This is the same process that can be used when you want to assign animals to cage and trade them off to traders.

Only that you will need to remove the placed cage, that way it is moved to the cage stockpile to be traded off to other traders.

Make a lever somewhere and link the lever to this cage.

Now that you have the lever linked properly, you might want to consider pulling the lever. Before you link, make sure you are sure to have 2 - 3 mechanism.

You will see that once a dwarf pulls the lever, every animals in your cage will be released to move around. Anyways, if the animals are tamed, it is easier to recapture them and place them back in their cages.

Now that is how you can release vermin...
